Have you ever wanted to be a guitar rock god? Check. Have you then gone out and bought a guitar to learn on? Check. Have you then tried learning to play the guitar? Check. And failed miserably? Check.

Well, despair not! For you can still be a god of rock! Yes, you see, all you have to do is get yourself a copy of the incredible Guitar Hero 3: Legends of Rock, strap on the plastic life-size guitar controller that comes with it, turn up the volume to 11 on your sound system and you’re set to rock the neighbourhood, dude!

If you haven’t played a GH game before, here’s how it works. GH comes with a unique controller that is shaped like a guitar, with five coloured buttons representing the frets, a strummer and a whammy bar. The idea is simple enough—you “play" the guitar by striking the strummer and pressing the coloured buttons that correspond to the coloured notes scrolling down the screen. Press them at the right time and you’ll make music. Press them at the wrong time and you’ll be making pathetic sounds. It seems simple enough—but wait till you start playing and find your fingers darting about in wild panic as they try to keep up with the music.

GH3 comes with a fantastic song line-up that includes tracks from Rolling Stones, Aerosmith, Metallica, The Who, Cream, Pearl Jam and other legends of rock (hence the title). The game offers a career mode where you star in a story about an upcoming band that is trying to achieve rock greatness by playing progressively bigger and better gigs. The story is entirely forgettable, but it serves as a good excuse to pace through the difficulty curve as each gig offers a selection of tracks that are usually tougher to play than the previous gig.

You will actually want to pay attention to the tutorial if you’ve never played this kind of game before. It teaches you the basics, plus stuff like hammer-ons and pull-offs which are quite essential if you wish to master the more difficult tracks. There is also the excellent Practice mode where you can practice any song you like for as long as you want. It even allows you to slow down the tempo or practice certain sections.

Most songs are quite fun to play without being too challenging. However, some, such as Slayer’s Raining Blood, are difficult to play on any setting and may take more than a couple of attempts to get them right. And don’t even get me started on Dragonforce’s Through Fire and Flames.

All said and done, if you love rock music and if you love video games, then for the love of god, get yourself GH3!
