5 ways to maximize your iOS 8
Apple's new iPhone operating system allows developers more freedom and flexibility to add features
Apple Inc. released iOS 8, the latest iteration of its smartphone operating system, on 17 September . While some users have downloaded it on their iPhones and iPads, others are waiting for an initial usage feedback. In the meantime, app developers are updating and optimizing their apps to utilize iOS 8’s features better. The structural changes in the new OS allow cross-linking and sharing of content between multiple apps, and the introduction of the widgets feature allows instant access to information from the notification centre itself.
Some apps have already been updated with new features, making full use of the iOS 8’s “generosity". If you have updated your iPhone or iPad, you could download these apps:
Microsoft OneDrive
Free
It is interesting to see Microsoft trying to take full advantage of the excitement around iOS 8. People who sign into their Microsoft account from the OneDrive cloud storage app (formerly SkyDrive) from an iPhone or iPad, and activate the photo “auto-upload" feature, will get 15 GB additional free storage. The offer is on till the end of September. This bonus could prove useful if you are running out of space on the phone and need to back-up your photos and videos.
Evernote
Free
Instapaper
Free
Yahoo Weather
Free
Yahoo Weather has always been a beautiful weather app, with full-screen photos that change according to the weather and the time of the day. The latest update adds a completely animated widget as well. This widget refreshes automatically, and features the same animations as on the app’s full-screen view. The images are specific to your location at that time, and are automatically selected from Flickr’s photo library, with dynamic weather illustrations (like rain or fog) added on.
Box for iPhone and iPad
Free
The latest update adds the Document Provider extension, which allows users to access the files saved on Box’s cloud storage, with other applications on the iPhone. More than 100 file formats are supported at the moment, and the ability to directly open files with other apps makes it easier to view, edit and share. For example, you can now open and edit a text document saved on Box using the Pages application, and then email it to your colleague.
