Jeweller David Morris on caring for precious gems and alternatives in engagement rings

David Morris is a Bond Street jeweller known for his glamorous and classic designs as well as his association with creating one-of-a-kind pieces for James Bond films such as Diamonds Are Forever, The Man with the Golden Gun and The World is Not Enough. Edited excerpts from an email interview:

Can you give some tips to men who do not want to go the diamond solitaire route for an engagement ring?

In recent years, the idea of a three-stone ring has become a lot more popular. By doing this, you avoid the solitaire look and you can add colour to the stones. I feel that a beautiful Burma ruby, Kashmir sapphire or Colombian emerald flanked by two white diamonds looks amazing. Many celebrities have moved towards coloured diamonds for their engagement rings and this, in turn, has increased demand for unusual coloured diamonds—pinks, yellows, even green.

What are the five pieces of jewellery every woman should have?

Every woman should have a pair of 3 carat diamond studs for everyday, a pair of glamorous chandelier earrings for the evening, a funky cocktail ring for lunches and cocktails, a row of natural Basra pearls which is a piece of jewellery forever, and a rose-cut ring.

How do you care for different types of gemstones?

Most gemstones are quite hard-wearing, but they have an affinity for grease and oil—it sticks to them like a magnet. Gold, platinum and most gemstones can be best cared for with hot soapy water and a gentle scrub with a toothbrush. This will remove the oil which can spoil their sparkle. Some old wives’ tales advise the use of vodka or gin, but it is such a terrible waste.

Some gemstones require special attention. Never clean emeralds in the way mentioned above. They are porous stones and any chemicals can cause them to dry out and fracture.

Organic gemstones such as pearl, opal, coral and jet should similarly only be professionally cleaned as they are very delicate. In the case of pearls, it is always best to put them on last when dressing for a formal occasion since the acids in perfume and the skin can eat away their layers and ruin their lustre. Always wipe them with a soft, clean, slightly damp cloth when taking them off and store them in a separate box to stop abrasion with other stones.

Finally and most importantly, jewellery is precious and should be treated as such. Never do any heavy work in your jewellery and store it very carefully, preferably in separate pouches within your jewellery case.
