Social anxiety can lead to Facebook addiction

Social anxiety and the urge to be a part of a group can lead to addiction of social networking sites like Facebook, which in turn can have a bad effect on a person’s health, says a new study. Researchers from The Ohio State University, Hope College in Michigan, and Seoul National University, South Korea, noted that the combined social connections capability and messaging features of Facebook may offer an appealing social media environment for users with social anxiety. The study found that the link between social anxiety and excessive use of Facebook was high in users who had medium to high levels of need for social assurance, also defined as a strong desire to seek companionship and interact with others. The study was published in the journal Cyber Psychology, Behaviour, and Social Networking.Read more here.

Snoring linked to diabetes risk in older adults

Elderly people with snoring issues or sleep apnea are more likely to have high blood sugar and type 2 diabetes in comparison to sound sleepers, a study claims. The researchers went through the Cardiovascular Health Study which recruited 5,888 participants of 65 years of age or more between 1989 and 1993 and found that participants who reported snoring and sleep apnea had higher fasting blood sugar levels than normal sleepers. They also developed insulin resistance, which means their body was producing higher than normal amounts of insulin but was less able to use it to control their blood sugar levels. None of the participants had diabetes when they enrolled. The research was published in the journal Diabetes Care. Read more here.

Patients who feel ready to leave hospital are more satisfied

People who are happy to leave hospital when they are discharged are more satisfied with the hospital and the caregivers than those who don’t feel ready to go, shows a new study. Researchers used an American hospital’s data of 220 adult patients, who were admitted to the hospital between 2009 and 2012, and found that 55% of the participants felt good about being discharged. 87% of the people who wanted to be discharged were satisfied with the hospital services. The research was published in the Journal of the American College of Surgeons. Read more here.

People who feel discriminated are more likely to smoke and eat less

A new research suggests those who feel discriminated are more likely to smoke, eat fatty foods and sleep less. Researchers used the Jackson Heart Study data to examine the link between multiple measures of perceived discrimination and health behaviours among almost 5,000 African-American residents of the Jackson, Mississippi metropolitan area. They found that 50% men and 38% of the women reported everyday discrimination due to race. Exposure to lifetime discrimination was even higher, reported by 51% of women and 63% of men. The research was published in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health. Read more here.
