MS Office files, such as Word documents, Excel spreadsheets and PowerPoint presentations, are the de facto formats for those types of files, but for home users, MS Office is an expensive option. People can always use Google Docs, but if you don’t want to connect to the Internet just to edit a document, then LibreOffice is one of the best free office suites. LibreOffice has various modes like Writer and Math for documents and spreadsheets, and is small, easy to install, and uses less memory, making it run better on older machines. If you’re used to MS Word and Excel, LibreOffice is very easy to switch to; the interface and placement of buttons is generally the same. Many shortcuts are also the same, but there are some differences, which can take a little getting used to. The only other caveat is that LibreOffice defaults to ODT files, so every time you save a new document, you must manually set it to use DOC files. Otherwise, LibreOffice provides a free, fast and uncomplicated alternative to MS Office. Download at: www.libreoffice.org/download/
