Foodie kit: Keep these spices handy even on the go.
One way of being an efficient packer is years of trial and error. But, if you need an immaculately packed suitcase as of yesterday, there’s an easy way out. Before or during your vacation this summer, swing by stores that specialize in travel products and essentials. You’ll find everything from mini mouthwash bottles and sunblock to cardboard music speakers, lint rollers and grooming kits.
Stores such as Flight 001, with branches in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Dubai, offer compression bags for contracting clothes into the smallest possible space and containers for essential items (soap, razors, pills). Try the Flip and Tumble Tote ($15, around Rs600), a lightweight nylon bag that collapses into a small ball, or the Luggage Scale ($12) featuring a weighing hook and a measuring tape to ensure you don’t get into skirmishes at the airline check-in desk.
Foodies should consider investing in the organic Mobile Foodie Kit ($35), a slim metal case with pots of organic dried herbs and spices such as garlic, cinnamon and cloves, as well as that indispensable bottle of Tabasco. And, while you’re at it, don’t forget to get a spork ($4), which is a spoon, fork and knife, all rolled into one.
If you’re travelling through Europe and Asia, Muji is the place to pop into. You can buy travel-sized spray, pump or roll-on containers for your favourite toiletries, earplugs (£1.95, around Rs155), a mini portable ashtray (£2.95) or a folding nail file (£1.95).
