NEW DELHI :

Aficionados of Indian classical music have something new and fresh to look forward to in New Delhi band Shadow and Light’s performance at the latest edition of the Friends Of Music (FOM) concert in the Capital today.

Their sound—a soulful confluence of Pavithra Chari’s voice and fusion band Advaita’s Anindo Bose’s music arrangement—is a blend of Indian classical with elements of jazz and blues. A SoundCloud project they started last year has matured into a full-fledged album (Shadow And Light), and the duo will perform songs from it.

FOM, an initiative by entertainment company Teamworks Arts Pvt. Ltd, organizes monthly gigs featuring musicians—amateur/new or seasoned—across genres.

What started in 1995 in the living rooms of musicians and music lovers alike has evolved into an iconic music club in New Delhi. “FOM is primarily a place for musicians to grow...and test their new work to a relatively supportive audience," says Sanjoy Roy, managing director at Teamworks, over email. In the past, FOM has featured talents such as Indian Ocean, The Langas and the Manganiars, Parikrama and Rabbi Shergill.

The line-up for the gig today consists of three bands—Shadow and Light, Five8 and Kitchensink.

Shadow and Light will perform songs like Tadap and Dream Gone Wrong that are about basic emotions like guilt, melancholy and love, and “everyday experiences that are small yet significant", says Chari. Bose adds that audiences can expect to hear “music (that) is uplifting, yet there is a dark tone to it".

The other two bands have Adhir Ghosh as guitarist. The three-albums-old funk/rock outfit Five8 started as a college band in Delhi University’s Kirori Mal College, performing at college festivals. The band consists of Ghosh, Aveleon Vaz (drums), Robin Mathew (vocals), Shiv Ahuja (keyboards) and Steve Peter (bass). They will be performing songs from their latest album, Our Imaginarium, live for the first time.

The guitarist might be the same but the music of the third band, Kitchensink, is quite different—it’s a mix of jazz and contemporary. The band is known for “playing and improvising over a tune" they have composed themselves, or “reinterpreting" songs. Set up in 2013, the band comprises Rohit Gupta (keyboard), Smiti Malik (vocals), Jayant Manchanda (bass), Siddharth Jain (drums) and Ghosh.

Ghosh believes that New Delhi is the place to be as far as indie music is concerned. “Delhi, right now, has great opportunities. I mean, I’m what you call a ‘full-time’ musician and I keep quite busy," he says.

Friends Of Musicwill be held on Friday, 7.30pm onwards, at Lodi-The Garden Restaurant, Lodi Road. Tickets, 350, and 315 for students, available on in.bookmyshow .com. Click here for details, call 26011430.
