Film Review | GI Joe: Retaliation
What else to expect from a movie franchise based on a set of toys?
After the you-have-got-to-be-kidding antics of Olympus Has Fallen comes GI Joe: Retaliation, which takes preposterousness to new highs or lows, depending on your taste for that kind of cinema.
In the follow-up to GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra, the evil Zartan continues to impersonate the American president (Jonathan Pryce) right under the noses of the US government and hawk-eyed Washington, DC reporters. Zartan orders the destruction of the GI Joe unit and springs from a high-security prison various masked men who have been suspended in water like frogs in beakers. Naturally, a handful of GI Joes (Dwayne Johnson, Adrianne Palicki, DJ Cotrona) escape and save the globe from destruction. Domestic viewers can take heart from the fact that India is one of the countries in Zartan’s sights, and that the Indian prime minister is among the world leaders bullied by Zartan into destroying their nuclear warheads.
GI Joe: Retaliation opens on 29 March.
