MUMBAI

Film

Mithya

8 February

Every actor hopes to feature in at least one career-defining film, and for Ranvir Shorey that film is ‘Mithya’, a stylish and flippant comedy about mistaken identities that’s being released in theatres six months after it made its debut at the Osian’s-Cinefan festival. Shorey plays a double role: He’s flop actor VK and also underworld don Raje. Arm-twisted into impersonating Raje by a rival gang, VK takes his part a bit too seriously, and the tragicomic consequences allow Shorey to show off the comic timing and vulnerability that made him so endearing in films such as ‘Mixed Doubles’ and ‘Aaja Nachle. In major theatres.

Retour de Flamme

9 February

Serge Bromberg has scoured attics, basements and building wrecks in his quest for lost treasure. Occasionally, he has stumbled upon precious booty in cheese shops and laboratories awaiting demolition. This fortnight, Paris-based Bromberg will allow you a peek into the riches that he has amassed over the last 25 years. At the Kala Ghoda festival, he will present ‘Retour de Flamme’, a “cine-concert" that will piece together some of the classic films and rare footage that he has salvaged from ruin and restored. ‘Retour de Flamme’ (or rescued from the flames) gets its name from the fragile physical condition of the films it showcases. Bromberg, a passionate collector of classic cinema, had to painstakingly restore highly inflammable reels of nitrate film and convert them to a digital format to ensure that these movies didn’t disappear forever. 8.15pm. (Duration: 1 hour 45 mins). Asiatic Library, Shahid Bhagat Singh Road, adjacent to Reserve Bank.
