Review: Micromax Canvas Doodle 4

The Doodle 4 is a good looking phone with a massive screen, but its performance doesn't justify its price

Handling a large phone can be tricky. The Micromax Canvas Doodle 4 ( 9,499) has a 6-inch screen, but its design ensures it does not feel ungainly. The same, though, cannot be said for its performance: the phone slows down when multiple apps are open, and the camera disappoints.

Design: Footprint kept in check

Display: Low resolution screen

Software: Latest Android with simple UI

Doodle 4 runs on the latest Android 5.0 (Lollipop). Since its big screen makes it comfortable for working on documents, the pre-loaded apps include Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, Evernote and the editing tool Skitch.

Processor: Just not enough RAM

The Doodle 4’s specs are underwhelming compared to its rivals’. That reflects in its performance. It has a fairly powerful quad-core MediaTek MT6582 processor, but that benefit is held hostage as there is just 1GB of RAM to help it. The phone gets visibly slower when you open multiple apps; there aren’t enough resources to let them all work smoothly. It isn’t a surprise that the Doodle 4 is sluggish with graphics-heavy games. In comparison, the Redmi Note has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 quad-core processor and is paired with 2GB of RAM, which ensures much better performance when multiple apps are open.

Camera: Weak performance

Battery: Long-lasting

The Doodle 4 comes with a 3,000mAh battery that lasted a whole day on full charge when we used it for web browsing, reading, social networking, 1 hour of watching movies and 30 minutes of gaming. If you don’t watch movies regularly on your phone or play games, the battery will probably last a day and a half.

Verdict

Canvas Doodle 4 has a great design and good battery life. But the low-resolution screen, lack of enough RAM and sluggish camera make it a disappointment overall.
