New Performance Festival
This India Foundation for the Arts’ (IFA) event promises to bring on stage a number of new and interesting productions funded by the foundation. The performances will use a range of media, from digital animation to shadow puppetry, and explore unusual themes such as the history of the Naxalite movement and the lives of mill workers in Mumbai. Inspired by traditional forms such as Pung Cholom and Bharatanatyam, the productions draw on genres like poetry and the visual arts.
The festival opens with ‘About Ram’, an adaptation of Bhavabhuti’s ‘Ramayana’ that combines digital animation and puppetry. Australian playwright Richard Murphet’s ‘Quick Death’, which presents Janus with a double-faced head, each looking in opposite directions, as a metaphor for the human condition, will be staged the next day. ‘Quick Death’ follows a genre of dramatic literature that depends on written transcriptions of physical actions and gestures to construct the theme, plot, character and spectacle.
‘The Rhythm Divine’, which will be staged from 26-27 February, will present Astad Deboo in collaboration with Guru Seityaban and the Pung Cholom dancing drummers of Manipur. Pung Cholom is a Tandav dance form that is performed as an invocation preceding the “Sankirtana" and also as a prelude to the “Ras Lila" in Manipur. Vyuti—Inflections, the last performance on 28-29 February, explores the movement principles of Bharatanatyam and reinterprets them by giving the form new spatial and architectural dimensions through light and image installations. 1,000 Days and a Dream

‘1,000 days And A Dream’, directed by Saratchandran C. and Baburaj P., won the Jury Award at the recently-concluded 10th Mumbai International Film Festival. Since its release in 2006, the film has been screened at nearly 20 film festivals in India and abroad. Alain Brunet Trio

The avant-garde French Alain Brunet Trio will join tabla player Manosh Bardhan and sarod player Debi Prasad at the Grand Ashok. The trio’s performance with the Indian musicians is set to draw up as much curiosity as the two different disciplines of music will bring out an exquisite combination. The performance will include Alain Brunet on vocals and trumpet, Luc Fenoli on the guitar and Jean- Louis Do on the drums. At Grand Ashok. For more details, contact 25501128.
