Silsila : Shiv Kumar Sharma and I ensured that at least 70% of our creations for films had classical elements. The flute played an important part in our compositions, including my favourite from this film, ‘Neela Aasman So Gaya’.
Baiju Bawra : I loved the lyrics of the song ‘Tu Ganga ki Dhaar Main’. I find it depressing to listen to film songs now. Their lyrics simply don’t manage to create a mood the way these songs did.
Aaye Din Bahar Ke : The best use of classical flute I have heard is in a song from the film ‘Suno Sajna, Papihe Ne’. Such a wonderful song by Laxmikant Pyarelal. We all worked really hard at it. That was the great thing about composers such as Madan Mohan, Salil Chowdhury and Roshan—they involved every member of the orchestra in their songs.
Heat and Dust : The background score of this film was put together in London with contributions from many artistes. Zakir Hussain handled the Indian music and Richard Robbins, the Western bit. In the end, it worked out to a great combination of both Western and Indian influences.
Manmauji : Madan Mohan is a very lyrical and romantic composer. I like the way he worked up the mood in a song like ‘Main to Tum Sang’. There is a lesson there for every film composer.
