Dance and Music festival

1-7 February

The Indiranagar Sangeet Sabha is organizing the annual Dance and Music festival as a tribute to saints Purandara Dasa and Thyagaraja. The series of concerts, spread over seven days, will feature leading artists from across the country. The festival will begin on 1 February at 6pm with a violin duet by Mysore M. Nagaraj and Dr M. Manjunath. This will be followed by Padma Bhushan Sankaranarayanan’s vocal concert on 2 February at 6pm, a vocal duet by the Hyderabad Brother on 3 February and a Bharatanatyam performance by Roja Kannan and party on 4 February. Popular mandolin player U. Srinivas will perform on 5 February. The festival will end with the presentation of the ‘Purandara award’ to Padma Shri Kalaimani Kadri Gopinath, followed by a concert by the vidwan himself. Gaata Rahe Mera Dil

2 February

If you are a fan of Hindi film music, don’t miss this annual tribute to famed lyricist O.P. Nayyar at the Chowdiah Memorial Hall. Gaata Rahe Mera Dil, conducted by the DMS Trust, has been held at several venues across south India and is recognized as an important platform for singers. The artists who will be taking part include Anil Bajpai, Priya Panchal, Nayan Shah, Jaya Rajagopal Anitha and Surojit Guha. They will be accompanied by an orchestra. At 6.30pm. Rasa Yatra

1 February

Smriti Nandan Cultural Centre is presenting Rasa Yatra, a journey through the essence of ragas to create an experience of how different ragas portray different moods. Does a raga lend itself to one particular emotion or is it possible to convey a range of emotions within the magic of a single Raga framework? The evening attempts to address these and other such issues in music. The ragas are presented by Lalita Ubhayaker and the vocal recitals are by Purnima Kulkarni, Bharati Pratap and Meghana Kulkarni. They will be accompanied on the harmonium by Vyasamurti Katti and by Udayraj Karpur on the tabla.

Dhamaroo

1 February

Nalak Ghante, a group of students of the Association of People with Disabilities, is presenting a play titled ‘Dhamaroo’, a collection of experiences of a sweeper whose 4 am to 4 pm routine opens out into anecdotes, memories, incidents and moments he has not been able to forget. City-based theatre group Masrah worked with Nalak Ghante (4 O’ clock) for over three months and the performance is incidental to the process itself. Using the language of theatre to share their experiences, the performers come together with the rhythm of the dhamaroo, in their own languages. Following the play, there will be a discussion to help the audience understand the process, thereby explaining the performances. 6.30 pm. At the Centre for Film and Drama, Millers Road.
