Sometimes, the baby won’t stop crying and your arms are sore from rocking her, or you need your hands free to get a job done, but still want her to be able to see you. Enter the bouncer, a lightweight chair with a three-point harness that secures the baby in place, and rocks or bounces gently in response to the baby’s movements (or can be rocked by you).
The gentle bouncing encourages a restless baby to doze or settle down. Some fidgety babies don’t take to the chair, most others love it and slip into a state of bliss. It’s one of those things you can probably live without, but still make life that much easier if you have them. Mothercare sells the basic version (Rs995-Rs1,695), as well as some with a soothing vibrating action (Rs1,995-Rs2,995), as do most of the larger baby stores in Mumbai and Delhi. Fisher-Price makes fancier models with massagers, music and even aquariums (Rs1,000 upwards; www.fisher-price.com). Most bouncers work for babies weighing up to 10kg, though Fisher-Price has models that take toddlers up to 18kg.
