During the 1961 tour to the West Indies, Dilip Sardesai fell ill. The doctor was summoned and he advised Sardesai rest and, “Have some chicken soup and things like that.”
We left him in bed and went to the ground. When we got back, some of us went to Dilip’s room to find out how the patient was progressing. By his bedside lay a plate with a pile of chicken bones. “What have you been eating,” we asked Dilip. His answer: “As the doctor advised, I had chicken. Unfortunately, they had no soup.”
