OTHERS :

At the cost of sounding like a character out of the popular TV series, Game Of Thrones, winter is actually coming. At least that is true for the north and eastern regions of the country. Even where the temperature is not dipping too rapidly, the weather is changing subtly. Often unpredictably too. Which leaves one with two options: one can suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous weather patterns or by downloading a few apps, at least be prepared for the changes and dress up accordingly. Yes, we are talking about the wonderful world of weather apps, for your smartphone, which deliver information about what the weather is like currently and is going to be like in the coming days. Here are some of the free-to-download apps.

Fire + Rain

iOS

Fire + rain comes from the Weather Network, a Canadian weather speciality television network and media company. Which is perhaps why the folks there decided to come out with something for those who just wanted something simple. And fire + rain is just that. There are three colour themes—Fire, Earth and Rain—and all you see on the display is basic weather information presented in large fonts on a minimalist design. You can double tap to see different forecasts or simply scroll through predictions for different times, with the shade of colour changing depending on the time and weather. It is so simple and elegant that you will find yourself going to it just to see how good it looks.

Weather Underground

iOS, Android

This is the app for those who really want a lot of information. It pretty much throws the kitchen sink at you when it comes to weather forecasts, from the current temperature to precipitation levels to wind speeds to dew point and visibility. You can also see forecasts for the coming days and if concerned about the pollution levels, keep an eye on ozone levels, pollen and particulate matter. And that’s the tip of the iceberg. There’s also access to public webcams and infographics and the like, from many cities around the world. It can all be a little overwhelming but weather junkies will feel right at home.

Google News & Weather

iOS, Android

The search engine has given its news app a bit of an overhaul, and combined weather information with it. This app gets full marks for speed and simplicity. It will not dazzle you with colours, but presents the current weather conditions and the forecast in simple charts, with the news. You will see the temperature and precipitation data, along with a forecast for the next three days. We think it is a great option for those who just want a quick glance at the weather and then get back to the news, which the app also provides in some detail. It works well on slow networks too, because not having all those dazzling graphics does have its plus points.

One can suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous weather patterns or by downloading a few apps, at least be prepared for the changes and dress up accordingly-

Yahoo Weather

iOS, Android

Yahoo!’s approach to the weather is one of the most interesting and unique we have seen. Yes, the app does come with the weather reports and predictions that you would expect from any self-respecting app (including a neat windmills graphic showing wind speed), and we must confess that we love its clean layout and large fonts that allow you to absorb information with minimum fuss. But what makes the app really special is that it pulls out images from Flickr (Yahoo!’s photo-sharing network) to show you rich and vivid images that correspond to the weather information that you are seeing. You can also choose to see weather conditions in other cities and simply switch between them with a swipe of your finger. The in-app ads can be irritating, but the app itself is sleek and so well designed that you don’t mind them that much.

Instaweather

iOS, Android

In the era of mobile photography, there is definitely room for this rather interesting app. The aim of Instaweather is simple—to place weather conditions on any photograph you take. There are a number of font options out there as well as frames and settings, and even some animations. And if you are not content with what the app has to offer, go right ahead and buy some from within the app itself. If all you want to do is look at the weather, you can launch the app and simply see basic information, even as the app opens the camera in the background. But if you are the type that likes to share information on the weather in your area with a picture or two, this is definitely the app for it. No app married photography to the weather better.
