Endellion String Quartet

4-5 October

The 30-year-old string quartet from the UK revisits Mumbai after 14 years. When the Endellion Quartet first performed in Mumbai in 1997, violinist Andrew Watkinson saw that the audience was tiny and comprised mostly the elderly. He hopes that the audience will be bigger and younger this week when they perform at the National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA). The Endellion Quartet’s choice of pieces reflects this intensity and intimacy.

On the first day of their two-day stint in the city, they will perform Beethoven’s Quartet in F major H 34, Bartok’s String Quartet No. 5 and Smetana’s String Quartet No. 1. On Day 2, they will perform Beethoven’s String Quartet Op 59 No. 2 and Schubert’s String Quartet No. 15 in G major.

7pm. Experimental Theatre, NCPA, Nariman Point (66223737/66588997). Tickets, 200 and 300, available at the box office, 9am-7pm daily.

Looking for Eric

6 October

Ken Loach’s new film has soccer star Eric Cantona as the imaginary mentor of a Manchester postman who suffers panic attacks and can’t cope with his stepsons. It’s a playful but never gimmicky set-up that turns hero worship on its head, as the cool-headed Cantona appears in the life of scruffy Eric Bishop (Steve Evets), telling him

in that familiar sagely mumble to pull himself together and reconnect with his pals.
