Lockwood International, a New Zealand-based wood construction company, has tied up with MacDonald Sarin, India, to bring its first prefabricated wooden homes to India, aimed at the luxury market.
A patented technology used to treat the wood, makes it termite-proof, able to withstand humidity, rain, 150 km of winds, and even earthquakes up to 7 on the richter scale. Compared to home made of concrete, these homes also tend to stay cooler in the summer and warmer in winters.
In a continuous celebration of Earth Day, the wood used to build these homes, radiata pine, is not taken from rainforests. Trees are grown on plantations and are replenished as they are used, making the process environmentally sound, according to the builders.
