The shatterproof Moto X Force
Got clumsy hands? Then the Moto X Force must make it on your list of phones to buy
Motorola’s latest flagship, the Moto X Force, is the first to come up with a “shattershield" screen.
In a demo video released on Tuesday by the company, the Motorola team drops a Moto X Force from a height of 5ft on a surface made of concrete and sandpaper (most of the display damages occur due to impact with a concrete surface). An Apple iPhone 6s, LG G4, Samsung Galaxy S6 and HTC One M9 are also dropped from the same height. The rivals are shown with shattered or smashed displays, while the Moto X Force has only a few chips around the edges but not a single scratch on the display.
Five layers of protection
Motorola has used five layers in the display to minimize the impact on the phone’s AMOLED screen. The first layer is of hard-coated glass to prevent scratches and minor abrasions. The second layer is the first line of defence against shattering. The third layer, known as the Dual Touch layer, protects the touch screen. In many cases, even a crack on a display affects the responsiveness of the touch screen, but the Dual Touch feature ensures the touch screen will not be affected.
The fourth layer is a flexible AMOLED screen, which has been used mostly in curved TV displays. These displays can bend and are supposedly more durable. Samsung has used it in the Galaxy S6 Edge smartphones. The last layer is an aluminium chassis that has been placed underneath the AMOLED display to hold the display together during impact.
Doesn’t add bulk to the device
With so many layers in the display, the question that comes to mind is whether it will make the smartphone really thick. Motorola smartphones are known to be chunky, weighing more than their rivals. The Moto X Force seems different in this regard. The phone weighs 169g and is only 9.2mm thick. The other key highlights of the Moto X Force include a 21-megapixel camera which can record 4K videos, a 5.4-inch display with a screen resolution of 2,560x1,440p, a Turbo charger and a water-repellent coating. It’s also 4G compliant.
The phone runs on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 810 octa-core processor that is notorious for heating issues, which is why Motorola has used an under-clocked (2.0 GHz) version of it. It is backed by 3 GB RAM and runs on a slightly older (Lollipop) version of the Android OS.
The smartphone will be available in two variants— ₹ 49,999 for 32 GB and ₹ 53,999 for 64 GB—from 8 February and will be available on Amazon.in, Flipkart.com and at retail stores like Chroma. This will be the first time a Motorola smartphone is available simultaneously in retail and online stores.
