We’re building a nursery. How should we create a neutral, peaceful space when we don’t know if it will be a girl or boy?

There are two aspects you need to consider: a colour scheme and a theme. Use soft pastels, without too much of either pink or blue. Soft lemons and lime greens work well. If you later want to accessorize for a boy or girl, both colours fit in well. Asian Paints has a wide range of pastel shades available off the shelf. And don’t forget the ceiling. The baby will often be looking up, so make sure to use colour on the ceiling with colourful toys and accessories suspended over the cot.

When choosing a theme, remember babies require a soothing environment. Patchwork cartoon animals or simple shapes work well and may be used as motifs. Avoid icons such as Barbie dolls or Spiderman. Keep the furniture tones light. A white cedar base works well for any colour scheme.

My dining room and living room are really just one big hall. How can I mark them as separate rooms?

Pick your colours. The simplest solution is to have two colour schemes with the same base colour. Choose a base colour to link the spaces and then a top colour to separate them. The two add-on colours should not jar. For example, use beige and rust in one area and beige and black in the next.

Try a visual partition. If the room is long, divide it into two with translucent blinds suspended from the ceiling. Ceiling-suspended accessories, such as strings of beads or strips of silk with bells, will add character to the space as well.

Use prints. Different prints in the same colour scheme can be used to blend the spaces. The living room can have a turquoise/lime green combination in stripes, with rich fabrics, like suede or raw silk, whereas the dining space may have polka dots in polyesters or cottons. If turquoise is more prevalent in the living room, use more lime green in the dining area.
