Review: Plantronics BackBeat Sense headphones

A well-designed headphone that sounds natural

Premium

NEW DELHI :

The BackBeat Sense is an on-ear headphone. And unlike some of its rivals, it doesn’t press inward on the ears, so it is quite comfortable to wear for hours on end. It tips the scales at a rather feathery 140g. The ear cups have memory foam, which understands the contours and retains shape accordingly. The left ear cup has a spring mechanism volume-control dial, which feels much better to use than in-line controls. There is a small button at the bottom of the left ear cup which reduces the volume of music and picks up the ambient sound through the built-in microphone (the headphone can also be used for voice calls) to let more ambient sound through—useful if you are speaking to someone or need to listen to announcements.

One of the neatest features is the proximity sensor, which automatically pauses the music playback as soon as you remove the Sense from your ears.

Audio performance, for the most part, is high-quality. In fact, the signature is closer to the natural Sennheiser’s sound than the warmer Bose signature. The balanced sound means there is adequate focus on the high and mid-range frequencies. It can pick out details in the sound stage surprisingly easily for a small-sized headphone.

The BackBeat Sense can go really loud too, but works best at volumes less than 70%—with low-quality tracks, some distortions are audible. Bass is not the most powerful out of the box, requiring you to tweak the sound equalizer on the source device. When pushed, these can reproduce lower frequencies well.

Travellers would really appreciate the good battery life—around 20 hours on a single charge, at 50% volume.

The headphone works on Bluetooth 4.0, and there is a claimed range of 100m in a straight line—this ticks the future-proofing box.

This is a well-designed headphone that sounds natural. The real attraction is the long-lasting battery.

The BackBeat Sense is priced at 9,999
