When we sent out an email alerting people we were on the lookout for people with ‘cool’ jobs, one smart aleck colleague responded: Lounge editor. Let me set the record straight: ensuring we are the best weekend read in your town, week after week, does not a cool job constitute.

One of the candidates featured in this week’s cover story (on Pages 12 to 14) told us he works in an office with a “college canteen environment". I don’t believe anyone on the Lounge team can identify with that statement.

Let’s see. I got monthly letters from Helen Gurley Brown. I attended the global editors’ conference held once every two years (in outrageous locations such as Paradise Island, the Bahamas). And, best of all, Indian women invited me into their bedrooms. Figuratively speaking, of course.

I recently met a man who used to read the magazine back then and he said he always believed we made up all the letters. That’s not true. The most amazing part of that job was that women from all over the country spilled secrets about their sex lives. And it was all on record—the magazine rarely got any anonymous letters. In retrospect, it was a V Monologues—Part Deux handed to me on a platter, month after month.

This week, columnist Vir Sanghvi shares a secret, too. Turn to Page 5 if you want to know what it is, but here’s a hint: We agree on one thing—Spidey just doesn’t make the cut. And if you’ve seen SM3, you’ll agree that a superhero who cries, gives women peonies, prefers the colours blue and red to black—and worse—removes sand from his supershoes is just not cool.

I have lots of favourite stories in this issue. We’ve even managed to get a peek into reclusive collector Anupam Poddar’s art collection (Page 20).

Plus our staples are even better than usual—tricks to save your precious art (Page 11), a new idea to keep your children occupied (Page 7) and lots more.
