The adoption of new versions of Android OS by phone makers has always been a slow process. Integrating custom UIs on any new OS is a time taking process and the main reason for the delay of rolling out updates for phones. According to Google’s own numbers, Android 7.0 and 7.1 account for only 4.9% of all Android devices as on 3 April 2017. Android Nougat was launched in October 2016, with Google’s own Pixel and Nexus phones getting it first, with new features such as side-by-side multi-tasking, better battery management and improved notifications. Here are some of the smartphones which run Android Nougat out of the box, now.
Asus ZenFone 3s Max
For a big-battery smartphone, the ZenFone 3s Max is quite compact and handy. The metal finish boosts its solidity and good looks. It runs Android 7.0 with a slightly polished version of Zen UI. It is powered by MediaTek MT6750 octa-core chip with 3GB RAM and 5,000mAh battery, and is ideal for movie buffs looking for a smartphone which lasts up to two days on one charge. It has a slightly bigger 5.2-inch display with resolution of 1,280x720p.
Moto G5 Plus
The main highlight of the Moto G5 Plus is that it doesn’t look and feel like a budget smartphone. It has a splash resistant metal exterior and a 5.2-inch screen with resolution of 1,920x1,080p. Its fingerprint sensor can also serve as the home, back and recent apps button. It runs Android Nougat 7.0 with near plain version of Android with elements of both Google Now and Pixel launcher. It is driven by Qualcomm’s mid-range Snapdragon 625 octa-core chip with 4GB RAM.
OnePlus 3T is a flagship killer in every sense. Not only it is powered by a top-end Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 chip with 6GB of RAM, but also runs the latest 7.1 version of Android with a clean-looking OxygenOS. It has a 5.5-inch (1,920x1,080p) AMOLED display with a layer of Gorilla Glass 4. It is a well-built smartphone with curved metal back design and comes in gunmetal grey, gold and midnight black colour options.
HTC U Ultra
The U Ultra is a beautifully designed smartphone with glass back and metal frame. It has a 5.7-inch display and 2.05 screen over it, yet doesn’t look big or feel bulky. It weighs just 170g. It runs Android 7.0 with Sense UI and also carries an AI-ready personal assistant called Sense Companion. The 5.7-inch display has a resolution of 2,560x1,440p, while the second screen has a resolution of 1,040x160p. The second screen shows recent apps and contacts. The smartphone is driven by Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 processor with 4 GB RAM.
Sony Xperia XZs
Sony Xperia XZs is another flagship smartphone with water and dust resistant metal exterior. It runs the latest 7.1 version of Android Nougat with the typical Xperia interface. It comes with a 19-megapixel camera which uses predictive capture to save moments before and after you take a shot. The 5.2-inch display has a resolution of just 1,920x1,080p, but it is a good-looking display. In terms of processing power, it uses the top-end Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 chip and has clubbed it with 4GB RAM.
LG G6 is another big-screen flagship with a 5.7-inch LCD display with very sleek bezels. The screen packs a resolution of 2,880x1,440 pixels and has a layer of the Gorilla Glass 5 for protection against impact and scratches. It is also water- and dust-resistant. It is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 821 chip with 4GB RAM. For camera buffs, there are two 13-megapixel cameras. It runs Android 7.0 (Nougat) with LG’s proprietary UI.
Samsung Galaxy S8
The Galaxy S8 is one of the most compact big-screen smartphones in the market. The 5.8-inch Infinity display stretches to the side panel, has a resolution of 2,960x1,440p and is protected against impact and scratches by Gorilla Glass 5. The Galaxy S8’s other highlights are hardware-level encryption, AI-backed personal assistant Bixby and Samsung Pay support. The 5.5-inch AMOLED display offers a resolution of 2,560x1,440p and is protected against scratches by Gorilla Glass 4.
