Setting up a compact yet nifty office
Putting together a small or home office? We pick a few of the new office essentials that will help you save space, time and even electricity
OTHERS :
If you are setting up a small office space out of your house or if you’re an entrepreneur equipping his first office, there’s a lot of hardware you need to buy, though some people might just get by with a phone and a laptop. We feature some devices which will smarten up your office space and make your work easier.
HP HotSpot LaserJet Pro M1218nfs MFP
₹ 18,306*
This new printer by HP, launched last week in India, is a multifunction printer compatible with a number of wireless networking solutions and comes with its own Wi-Fi hot spot. It can be used as a printer, a photocopier, a scanner or a fax machine, and it performs fairly well as a laser printer. The built-in hot spot can let you network up to eight machines from your office, all of which can also use the printer without any complicated network set-up, since it is the wireless hub here. And of course, you also save on having to buy and set up a wireless router.
₹ 2,399
Most of our new hardware is powered by USB cables—phones, tablets and even some cameras now charge off these ports—and the Conserve Valet is a great way to charge multiple devices without blocking off all your ports. This is essentially a USB powerstrip that plugs into the electric socket in your wall and can charge four phones and tablets at the same time. Not only that, it also cuts off power once the gadgets are charged, helping conserve electricity—a traditional wall socket keeps using power even when not in use. Belkin claims that this device can prevent almost 70% electricity waste during charging.
Dell Latitude 10 Tablet
₹ 42,490
The tablet also comes with full-size USB ports and a docking station with four USB 2.0 ports for use when you get to the office, making this a good bet for businesses which can’t buy multiple computers for their team.
Avision Scan Anywhere MiWand 2
When setting up a small office, space is often at a premium. A full-sized scanner takes up a lot of space and isn’t used much. Unless your work requires you to take multiple scans every day, this hand-held scanner is a better option as it can also be taken with you into the field. It runs on AA batteries and has a slot for a memory card to save the scans immediately. There’s also a small LCD screen which lets you preview the document being scanned, and according to Avision, a full A4 page can be scanned at high resolution in 1.6 seconds.
BenQ GP10 Projector
The GP10 is an office projector—instead of entertainment-driven features like full-HD, it has a 720p resolution and weighs only 1.5kg, making it easy to set up and to move around in the office. Since it’s a short-throw LED projector, you can easily place this at the end of a conference table, making it easier to talk to people while playing slides. Instead of the brightest image, the GP10 offers great energy efficiency and has a wireless connectivity option, so it’s easy to connect to the different devices in your office.
Western Digital Sentinel DX4000 storage
₹ 65,000 (4 TB)/ ₹ 99,000 (12 TB)
There are five levels of data protection, including a cloud backup, which would be
very expensive to purchase separately, making this storage set-up a value deal for smaller businesses.
Edimax EW-7438RPn N300 Wi-Fi Extender
Many small office set-ups start out of homes or other spaces which aren’t really designed to easily set up a network. Wi-Fi does make it simpler, but if you’re spread across different floors or in different rooms, this can also be difficult. The Edimax Wi-Fi Extender is a simple white box with a plug built-in which you connect to the wall socket, and an LED display lets you check for signal status easily. It finds and connects to the network and extends its range without any tech know-how needed.
