The iPhone 4S announcement was a bit of a let-down for people looking for an iPhone 5, but the newly revealed Siri personal assistant more than made up for it, overshadowing even the comprehensive iOS 5 update that came with the 4S. Siri is one of the most advanced voice control layers seen in a phone today—using a huge amount of reference material. Siri takes input in conversational English and turns that into commands for the phone. You can use it to send (or read) messages and emails, schedule meetings or perform searches. For instance, say “Remind me to call the vet when I leave work” and it’ll use the GPS to ask you if it should make the call on the way home. Or ask Siri if you need an umbrella, and it knows this means it needs to check the weather for your city. It works with the maps function as well and knows from context, home and office addresses. The system is deeply integrated into the iPhone 4S, currently the only iPhone powerful enough to support it, and will be integrated in future phones as well.
