Eye on Orissa
Pigeonholed as a pilgrimage destination, Orissa hasn’t really got its due from the tourist trade. While basic accommodation was always aplenty, there were few upmarket stay options. Now, the Mumbai-based Kamat Group of Hotels makes it easy to visit the coastal state’s own Golden Triangle: Puri, Bhubaneswar and Konark. The five-night/six-day Essence of Odisha package covers visits to Unesco crafts village Raghurajpur, the Konark Sun Temple, the Irrawaddy dolphin’s Indian home Chilika Lake, appliqué work heaven Pipli, Ashokan rock edicts site Dhauligiri, Jain rock temple clusters Udaygiri and Khandagiri and the sprawling Nandankanan zoo. Besides, should you be so inclined, you can also stop at the Jagannath Temple. The first two nights are spent at the Fort Mahodadhi Hotel, an erstwhile summer palace located bang on Puri’s beautiful beach. On the third night, you’ll be in Konark, cooling your heels at the Lotus Eco Resort on Ramchandi beach, located at the confluence of the Kusabhadra river and the Bay of Bengal. The last two nights are spent at VITS Bhubaneswar (www.vitsbhubaneswar. com).
Crafted: The Konark Temple.
On a half-board basis, the package costs Rs27,999 per person, inclusive of airport transfers, sightseeing in air-conditioned vehicles, breakfast and dinner.
