With the National Geographic and Discovery channels constantly focusing on the big five (elephant, rhino, lion, buffalo and leopard) of Africa, we have become quite familiar with the continent’s wildlife. Still, capturing Africa’s untamed glory continues to be every photographer’s ultimate dream. In Dream Safari: A Pictorial Journey through Africa’s Cradle of Life, Diinesh Kumble has laid out this “dream come true" on 220 pages of recycled paper for all to see.

The coffee-table book was released last month by the photographer-author’s brother, cricketer Anil Kumble and is available at all leading bookstores. Containing nearly 250 frames of African wildlife, the book is a personal account of Kumble’s travels through the two national parks and sanctuaries of Kenya and Tanzania over two weeks.

While most of the images are not exactly “never-seen-before", Kumble manages to capture the grit and romance of the African wild with sincerity. The book is also enhanced by the brief descriptions, which accompany every photograph, of animal behaviour patterns. The images almost reach a National Geographic-level of quality but, more importantly, they accomplish what the author intended to capture: his tryst with the wild.
