Colours at their most intense paint the ramp at both the Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week, Delhi and the Lakme Fashion Week, Mumbai. They also dazzle on clothes and accessories that have just hit the stores. This year, there’s no such thing as too much colour

COLOUR CODED

Designer Aki Narula thinks the only thing that goes with colour is more colour. Try his tips on wearing strong hues:

nThe best way to wear bright colours is to use solid colours, not prints. A technique called colour blocking is very trendy right now. What it means is that the outfit should look like it’s dividing you into two strong blocks of colour. For example, team a parrot green dress with a mustard bolero.

n If you want to wear strong colours, make sure the finish is dull, almost cement-like, and not bright and shiny.

n Denim goes with any colour, so when in doubt, just pull on a pair of jeans.

n I love to pair offbeat colours. Try olive and navy, canary yellow and dull pink, orange and dull khaki, brown and aubergine, purple and black, navy and grey, beige and purple and navy and latte. But please keep your age and body type in mind.

n If you’re wearing duller shades like navy and beige, don’t think twice before putting on a pair of turquoise shoes. You have to incorporate one bright, loud element. So a deep chocolate dress with red shoes looks just super.

n If you’re wearing a very strong combination of colours, say bright green and mustard, please keep your shoes and bag absolutely neutral. You should wear tan or beige shoes and not introduce a third colour on your feet.

n The most common mistakes people make is wearing too many loud colours together, or trying to match everything. Please don’t wear your mustard bolero with a mustard bag and shoes.I am not a believer in the ‘your belt should match your shoes’ rule.

n If you’re well-endowed, opt for darker tones. Use just one colour from head to toe or shades of the same family. Using two strong colours will cut you horizontally and make you look shorter.
