World Cup: 5 of the best catches
Here are some of the greatest catches from past world cups
NEW DELHI :
Jonty Rhodes
1999, South Africa vs England
The South African took two sensational catches—the first one was a great reflex catch to dismiss Andrew Flintoff off Allan Donald’s bowling, but the second one flirted, as Rhodes often did, with the impossible: Leaping high up in the air with such speed that he became a blur, Rhodes palmed the ball first, before catching it even as he fell to the ground. Robert Croft, the batsman, could hardly believe it.
Ajay Jadeja
1992, India vs Australia
In his first ODI against the Australians, the Indian came sprinting out of his long-on position, all the time keeping his eyes fixed on a lofted ball from Allan Border. He managed to somehow slip his fingers under the ball at the last second, arms fully extended and body thrown forward.
Shane Thomson
1996, New Zealand vs Pakistan
Off the bowling of Robert Kennedy, the New Zealander took a one-handed stunner—diving backwards at full fling and catching the ball over and beyond his shoulder at square leg to dismiss
Aamer Sohail.
Vasbert Drakes
2003, West Indies vs Canada
Drakes’ acrobatic effort, cut short Canada’s John Davison’s destructive batting display. Davison had scored the fastest world cup century, tonking half a dozen sixes en route to a 76-ball 111. The ball seemed to be clearing another boundary, when Drakes ran back and jumped behind to pull off a one-handed stunner to restrict Canada to 202—they had been cruising at 156 for two in 22 overs at one stage.
Martin Crowe
1987, New Zealand vs Zimbabwe
