First look: Lamborghini Huracan LP580-2

Lamborghini wants us to visualize the “base variant” Huracán called the LP580-2 as one for those who want to push their car, and themselves, a little bit more. The all-wheel-drive variant called the LP610-4, on the other hand, is meant to get the most out of the 5.2-litre V10 engine’s power. Sure, the LP580-2 has a nose-lift function which increases the car’s ground clearance to help you tackle speed bumps better, a smooth automatic gearbox and comfortable interiors, but in the end, it’s still a supercar, and you cannot mistreat it. But does the “cheaper” price of the Huracán LP580-2 make it any less of a Lamborghini? We find out in our test drive.

We got the chance to drive the Huracán LP580-2 on the Madras Motor Race Track, and were soon barrelling towards the first right-hand turn. Egged on by a few light barks from the engine, and fuelled by that heroic feeling only a supercar can elicit, it was time to turn the steering wheel firmly towards the corner.

That said, a lot of the electronic controls work constantly to keep you on the road. There’s the Anima drive mode selector, which alters the characteristics of the engine and how much power it delivers, the tame Strada mode and the aggressive Corsa mode. Make a mistake, and you will feel the need to go back into the pits and write on a chalkboard 1,000 times, “Never underestimate a rear-drive Lamborghini.”

The front of the Huracán LP580-2 is a lot lighter than the Huracán LP610-4, since it doesn’t have the weight of the four-wheel-drive hardware. As a result, it’s much quicker to turn in. The furthest we dared to set the Anima mode selector switch is the middle-range “Sport” setting, with the Electronic Stability Protection switched on.

There is no chance for you to figure out that the motor in the Huracán LP580-2 has 30hp less than the all-wheel-drive variant. It yells just as loudly, filling the two-seat cabin with a beautiful cacophony. But the noise is just one side of the story; there’s also the power delivery from this naturally aspirated 580hp V10 engine–it’s just so manageable.

Let’s face it though—a Lamborghini is as much about showing off as it is about driving fast.

As for the look, the headlamp design is a little on the tame side compared to some of its predecessors, but the car retains the V-shaped LEDs. The bumpers of the Huracán LP580-2 are different from the Huracán 610-4 and, personally, I think the former looks better. Even the rear aerodynamics and venting system look more aggressive. And that flash value continues on the inside. The driving position is low, and the sci-fi dashboard has aviation-style toggle switches.

“Perfect” is the best way to describe the Huracán LP580-2. The Rs44 lakh price difference between the Huracán LP580-2 (Rs2.99 crore, ex-showroom Delhi) and the Huracán LP610-4 is surely not something to scoff at, and you might question the need to shell out more for the latter. Yes, the four-wheel-drive will prove a valuable safety feature for many owners exploring the limits of a supercar for the first time, especially out on a race track or on a wet road. But unless you’re recklessly pushing your car too hard on the road, the Huracán LP580-2 has enough electronic assists working to keep you safe on the road. Plus, it’s more fun to drive once you’ve agreed to respect its ferocity.
