Salata Baladi

31 March

In her debut documentary, Egyptian film-maker Nadia Kamel sets out to explore the histories of both her family and her country. Salati Baladi, which means a salad with different ingredients, was chosen as the best documentary over 60 minutes at the Mumbai International Film Festival for documentaries, short and animation films in February. Kamel hails from a multiracial and multi-faith family, and the two main characters of her film are her young nephew Nabeel and her mother Naila, a journalist and communist.

Naila Kamel was born half Jewish and Christian but became a Muslim after she got married. Nabeel, who has a Palestinian father, is stateless because of Israel’s occupation of Palestine. Although Naila endorses her government’s decision to condemn Israel for its treatment of Palestinians, she yearns to meet her Israeli cousin Sarina. Although the film’s staggering duration is a challenge, the Kamels are fortunately a handsome and charismatic bunch and effectively communicate the hopes and fears of three generations of Egyptians. 7pm. Prithvi House, Janki Kutir, Juhu Church Road, near Hotel Tulip Star, Juhu (26149546).

Me, Kash and Cruise

2-3 April

It took Rahul da Cunha nearly three years and more than 20 drafts to write his latest play ‘Me, Kash and Cruise’. Da Cunha said he had to keep going back to the script to update the track of the one character whose actions were way beyond his control. “Bombay’s the fourth character," said da Cunha of the play, which covers the lives of the three characters named in the title, from 1984—when they form a theatre group in college—to the present.

The communal riots of 1992, the bomb blasts that followed a year after, the advent of moral police in 1995, the ban on the use of loudspeakers in 2005, and the recent mob molestation outside the JW Marriott Hotel on New Year’s Eve—each finds its way into the narrative. 7pm.

Experimental Theatre, National Centre for the Performing Arts. Tickets, Rs200 (22025483).

DJ Idiot

29 March

In 1998, Danish film-maker Lars von Trier released ‘Idoterne’, a film about a bunch of suburban Copenhagen residents who seek to challenge societal norms by acting mentally challenged in public places. The film so inspired Nishant Lalwani and his friends Rodrigo Davis and Russel Middleton that they decided to name their DJ collective after the film: thus was born The Idiots. This fortnight, Lalwani will play a disco/funk/electronic set at Blue Frog as The Idiot. 10.30pm. Blue Frog, Todi and Co., Mathuradas Mills Compound, Tulsi Pipe Road, Lower Parel. Tickets, Rs300 (40332300).
