Red, white and black

A few monochrome gowns stood out on the red carpet even as the 73rd Golden Globe awards saw a tepid dose of glamour

Glamour was hardly fierce at the Golden Globe awards at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills on 10 January. There were a few gorgeous gowns, a Dior here and a Versace Atelier there but nothing, absolutely nothing that left a fashion follower stirred and shaken to the core. Whites were in a majority and looked more enticing than the blacks in almost all cases while incidentally Amy Schumer’s gown by Prabal Gurung that was both black and white lived up to the fairy tale promise of red carpet glamour. Red came riding in plenty but was more fastidious than fiery except on Jennifer Lawrence. Florals were few, no avant-garde designs either. Jennifer Lopez served the biggest surprise, covered in a draped at the waist Giambattista Valli gown with a cape to boot. Her hair more blonde than burnt-auburn, she cocked a snook at predictable looks.

Here, our pick of the talking point ensembles of last evening.

Amy Schumer: In a boldly cut and draped black and white Prabal Gurung, Schumer was audaciously feminine and full of vim. Her hair was brushed back from the forehead and fell behind her neck, creating a clean canvas for her smiling face. She wore sexy black pumps giving her dramatic dress an even bigger lift.

Jennifer Lawrence: Also winner of the best actress in a comedy role for Joy, Lawrence who upped the ante on pay inequality in Hollywood this year wore a red Dior couture gown with sharp cut-out patterns. Her hair was beautifully swept up but her bold Chopard diamond necklace was a bit much. Its white-hot sparkle distracted from the artistry of the red Dior gown. She could have tried cascading earrings instead.

Laverne Cox: Reportedly, this was the trans-actress’s first Golden Globe ceremony. The Orange Is the New Black star came wearing a spotless white sleeveless Elizabeth Kennedy dress with a small train and Lorraine Schwartz blue-green jewellery. We didn’t care for the cabernet lipstick so much.

Kirsten Dunst: Demurely tied back hair and a stunning black Valentino gown with a plunging neckline daintily held together by black strings made Dunst look familiarly lovely and typically “red carpet". This is what starry ladies at evenings are all about.

Lady Gaga: The singer, songwriter’s off shoulder Atelier Versace gown in black had an “it factor". The shape, the fall, the luxe look—gave the blond and unusually bland looking Gaga who also won a trophy for best actress for a television miniseries a distinct presence. Gaga accessorized her look with diamonds but the real jewel was her dress.

Jennifer Lopez: You expect the fabulously sexy Lopez to be bare shouldered and bronzed, hair all tied up and arms glistening. No sirs. Ms Lopez came in a bright yellow Giambattista Valli gown with a waisted drape and a cape with glittering diamond jewellery. The deep slit on her gown perhaps tempted her to jut out her thigh, striking a diva pose. We noticed the leg alright, the glittering silver shoes too.

Saoirse Ronan: White was the brightest at the Golden Globes as even Ronan, who was nominated for the best actress award for her role in Brooklyn chose a Yves Saint Laurent gown with a draping cape by Hedi Slimane. She looked youthful and fresh with glamour and restraint held together in stylish balance.

Alicia Vikander: The face of Louis Vuitton’s Spring 2015 campaign, the pretty and slim Vikander came wearing a ruffled white LV dress by Nicholas Ghesquiere for LV with dangling diamond earrings and a slick hairdo turning heads.
