Known for its chic style — mixing traditional Chinese designs with a contemporary twist — Shanghai Tang has flagship boutiques in the shopping capitals of the world. The brand is bringing its Autumn-Winter 2008 collection of ready-to-wear clothes for men, women and kids, along with accessories and home décor items. Called Fu Zhi, meaning luck has arrived, the collection combines whimsical print patterns with flattering silhouettes that translate the rich cultural elements into modern, wearable pieces. “The pieces are suited for Indian tastes and the jackets are quite flattering,” says Samir Modi, managing director of Modi Enterprises, which is promoting the Shanghai Tang brand in India.

The knitwear pieces are highlighted with symbolic oversized knotting. The four distinct patterns that define the collection are the Ingot Print, Papercut Print, Luck Mosaic Print, and the Bubblefish Print.
A trunk show basically provides a preview of the season’s hottest fashion styles to an select group before the line is made available in general retail. These are referred to as “trunk shows” because the designer or sales rep will literally show up with a trunk of merchandise to show off. Many fashion houses such as Chanel are known to have trunk shows for their select clients.
“Last year’s show had a phenomenal response from the people, with Delhi going more for clothes and Mumbai for accessories and handbags,” says Modi. The products can also be ordered through Modi Enterprises through the year.
The prices start at Rs3,000 for accessories and Rs5,000 for a classic shirt. The brand is also planning to open exclusive boutiques in Delhi and Mumbai next year.
Entry to the Shanghai Tang trunk show is by invitation only. Contact Kanika Singal, manager, luxury retail, Modi Enterprises, at +91-9810231263; or send an email to ksingal@modi.com for details
