WhatsApp is one of the few messenger apps which keeps updating and adding new tools to the messenger service every month. The latest feature that is now rolling out on WhatsApp is a feature called Mentions which works within WhatsApp groups. However, it may not entirely be good news for everyone.
When a user sends a message on a WhatsApp group, all the members in the group get a notification, except those who have muted themselves from that group. Whatsapp had added the Muting feature to prevent annoying group notifications from bothering you. And that is something a lot of users had appreciated, because it meant you could silence an annoying group of friends, without having to rudely leave the group itself. It basically stops WhatsApp from sending notifications regarding messages from that group.
But now, with the Mentions feature, other users can tag you in messages with @YOURNAME, and you will get a notification irrespective of whether you have put the group on mute or not. This feature works only with the Android and iOS versions so far, and has not yet been rolled out for Whatsapp desktop apps.
How it works
Mentions won’t send a message exclusively to a user within a group chat. For that, one still has to send the message directly to the person’s individual WhatsApp profile. What Mentions does is that when a message is sent to a group, the notification for that message gets delivered even to those users who have muted all notification from the group. This will intimate the user with the notification for only that particular message.
User can scroll through and add multiple users to that list and then type the message after the names. This way the notification for message will be sent to a user even if the receiver has muted all notification from that group.
But there is a way around it
If you are unhappy about the idea of group messaging still bothering you when people tag you in messages, sometimes just to annoy you, there is a way around this too. You can still override these notifications by putting group notification on silent in Whatsapp Settings->Notifications->Group Notifications-> None. However, this will silence notifications from all groups, irrespective of their importance or nuisance value.
