The Embodied Image: Krishna Reddy
Till 21 January
An ongoing retrospective of acclaimed sculptor and printmaker Krishna Reddy, curated by Roobina Karode, chronologically charts the significant changes in Reddy’s career as a printmaker and sculptor, from the natural to the metaphorical to the figurative. Reddy, now 86, is best known in international art circles for his discovery, in the early 1950s, of the technique of viscosity printing, through which several colours could be printed simultaneously on a metal plate. The exhibition also offers glimpses of a real printing press and of the actual processes of printmaking through photographs of Reddy at work. A series of bronze and copper plates placed next to some of the etchings provide connections between the creative, technical and visual aspects of the medium.

A solo exhibition of recent paintings by Balbir Krishan, whose journey to his second solo show has been an onerous one. The 37-year-old artist has an awe-inspiring story to tell, full of dramatic ups and downs, but also love and hope. The present series emerged out of Krishan’s interest in the human form. Krishan used to paint male and female nudes till, one day, he came across a magazine with paintings by Bhupen Khakhar. “I had no idea of his existence until then, but his work changed my life," he says. He spent several sleepless nights questioning why he did not paint the homoerotic male bodies he really wanted to paint. “Bhupen Khakhar made his body of work decades ago. Why must I succumb to social pressure now?" he wondered. So, for his current series, Krishan painted male bodies over prints of homoerotic scenes on large canvases.

Directed by M. Sayeed Alam, this tongue-in-cheek comedy about the trials and tribulations of staging a play returns this fortnight. J.K. (Harish Chhabra), a harassed and hot-tempered director, is trying very hard to get his bunch of actors to, well, act. A week ahead of the performance, the play seems doomed—everything that could go wrong, does. Problems keep popping up during rehearsals, mishaps and mix-ups take place backstage, there is tension between the director and the writer—setting the scene for some genuine laughs.

Dastkari Haat Samiti’s Crafts Bazaar

When Dastkar marks its silver jubilee at the annual crafts bazaar, the artisans will return with a little more than just the craft stalls and song and dance that make up the usual festivities. Artisans participating in the two-week fair will put on live demonstrations for visitors to watch and learn. The highlights: ‘ringal’ bamboo baskets, ‘aipan’ painting, looms from Uttarakhand, camel belt -weaving demonstrations from Ahmedabad, fine ‘ari’ work from Gujarat and ‘gabba’, a floor-covering craft from Kashmir.

Swarankur concert

Joydeep Ghosh began experimenting with the rarely played instrument, sursringar, to perfect his strumming of the sarod. Khairagarh (Chhattisgarh)-based Ghosh, who originally hails from Kolkata, has a diverse background in classical music—vocal training from veteran singers Amaresh Choudhury and Dabir Khan, sarod training under Anil Roy Chowdhury for 13 years and then with Radhika Mohan Maitra in West Bengal, followed by 26 years’ training under Bimalendu Mukherjee. Ghosh has learnt all four gharanas of the sarod: Maihar, Shahjahanpur, Imdadkhani and Gwalior.
At the Swarankur concert, Ghosh will be playing Raga Shyam Kalyan and Raga Shudh Kalyan, and will be accompanied by tabla player Aditya Kalyanpur.

The dreamy electro-rock quartet Sky Rabbit, formerly known as Medusa, will be performing at blueFROG. Fans finally have the chance to take a nine-track CD featuring the band’s popular hits Anti-Coke Ganpati, and versions of Hilltop and I Become I. This is the band’s first full-length release since their first progressive-metal album Survival Off the Fittest in 2005.

The Ragamala Dance ensemble from Minneapolis, US, will present Sthree, a production inspired by the ancient Tamil epic ‘Silappathikaram’. Accompanied by English narration and set to a score composed by L. Subramaniam, ‘Sthree’ is “a contemporary adaptation that explores the underlying tension between the principles of karma and dharma" and is set in the Sangam period. Artistic directors Ranee Ramaswamy and Aparna Ramaswamy, who have learnt from Alarmel Valli, will be joined by a group of five female dancers.

A solo show of drawings of whimsical fictional beings by Malavika P.C. The Puducherry-based illustrator, designer and theatre actor is known for the cover art of The Blaft Anthology of Tamil Pulp Fiction editions, which she conceptualized and designed (though the covers were illustrated by the artist Shyam Shankar). The tentacled beasts in Creature Comfort are impressions the artist has had of people around her.

At the “Nritya Sinchana" series hosted by the Ananya GML Cultural Academy, danseuse Vidhya Subramanian will present Mudrika, a work that plays with the concepts of singularity and duality. Through her career, Subramanian has experimented with what she describes as the “open, accommodating space" of the traditional Bharatanatyam performance format, or margam. This recital includes His Curls, a piece based on a story by Jaya Padmanabhan, in which Subramanian introduces the element of vachikam, or speech, into the dance performance.

This village heritage festival brings alive the flavours of folk dances from Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and Karnataka. There are the tribal dances of the Kurumba community of the Nilgiris, a workshop on Tholu Bommalu, or leather puppetry, Yakshagana by the Yakshagana Kendra Udupi, Karnataka, and Velakali, a ritual dance performed in the temples of Kerala. The festival celebrates the month of Margazhi and Pongal (harvest), celebrated in mid-January.

Duck and Turkey Food Festival

Zhilann and Kaafila, two Salt Lake-based restaurants, will celebrate New Year’s eve with the Duck and Turkey Food Festival. Kaafila, famous for cuisine from Punjab, Pakistan and Afghanistan, will serve a wide range of food. Kolkata theatre group Swapna Sandhani will stage Notir Pujo—an interpretation of Rabindranath Tagore’s poem Pujarini. Directed by Koushik Sen, the play is the story of a marginalized woman’s fight against the establishment. Srimati, the protagonist and noti (dancer), is commanded to dance at Buddha Chaitya instead of worshipping, at a time when dancing was looked down upon as a lowly act.

Alice in Wonderland
Mrinal Dey, a young, award-winning artist, completed his master’s in fine arts from Indira Kala Sangeet Viswavidyalaya, Khairagarh, Chhattisgarh. His figures are garrulously loud, out-of-shape and exaggerated beyond proportion, symbolizing an acute sense of loneliness, a feeling of being lost in a maze of self-inflicted consumerism. His current exhibition consists of sculptures and paintings with flamboyant use of pencil on acid-free paper, acrylic on canvas and mixed media, as well as fibreglass and bronze. The works, on sale, range in price from ₹ 35,000 to ₹ 1 lakh.

Calcutta International Classical Guitar Festival 2011

The festival is presented by the Calcutta Classical Guitar Society in association with Bickram Ghosh and the Siddha Group.
