Scottish novelist and travel writer Robert Louis Stevenson’s adventure novel, ‘Treasure Island’, was adapted for the stage last year by playwright Bryony Lavery at the UK’s National Theatre. The play will now be screened as a film. On a dark and stormy night, Jim, the inn-keeper’s granddaughter, opens the door to an old sailor who calls himself “the captain". By his feet sits a huge sea chest. Jim invites him in and her dangerous voyage begins. 2 hours, 10 minutes.

This is a group show of 23 paintings by Aishwarya Suraj and Mayasri Ramesh. Suraj has a master’s in science (software systems) and experiments with conceptual, abstract paintings using oils, acrylic paints and watercolours on canvas. Ramesh, who has a bachelor’s degree in information technology, works on abstracts, semi-figurative abstracts, conceptual and contemporary painting using oils and acrylic paints.

Eshareh, a five-member group that seeks to re-establish a link between Eastern and Western cultures, will present melodies that use oral traditions such as Arabic chants. Eshareh, meaning allusion in Persian, combines such chants with Indian sounds. The evening will see Simon Dégremont on vocals, Matthias Labbe on tabla and mridangam, Julien Lahaye on zarb (a goblet drum), Sougata Roy Chowdhury on sarod and Vishal Vardhan on flute.

To celebrate International Women’s Day, fusion singer Isheeta Ganguly will present Three Women, a conversation between two women characters from Rabindranath Tagore’s novels (Bimala of Ghare Baire and Charulata of Nastanirh) and one from Tagore’s own life (his sister-in-law, Kadambari Devi). The play will be followed by a discussion, led by actors Deepti Naval and Perizaad Zorabian, on what women really want. 2 hours.

Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan Cultural Fest

Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan will organize a three-day cultural festival, starting with a sitar jugalbandi by brother-duo Rais and Hafiz Bale Khan, and a folk dance performance by artistes from the North-East. On Day 2, Kathak exponent Rani Karnaa, a Padma Shri awardee, and Odissi danseuse Sutapa Talukdar will present Purandara Namana, along with artistes of the Nupura School of Bharatanatyam, Bengaluru. The festival will conclude with a Bharatanatyam performance by Kusuma Ranjitha Vivin, an artiste of the Nupura School.

Love, Gender And Violence In Art

To mark International Women’s Day, which falls on Sunday, Alliance Française will co-organize a series of discussions and dance performances. The guest speakers will include Madhuja Mukherjee, a film-maker, and Anit Ghose, an observer at the United Nations Global Committee of Experts on Geospatial Information Management and co-founder of Geo Explorer, an organization which promotes indigenous knowledge. There will also be dance performances on both days.
