Review: Samsung Galaxy Note5

Samsung's latest Note flagship is a compact phablet

Premium

NEW DELHI :

The Note5 has a slightly smaller footprint than its predecessors, which makes it even more usable. The slight curves on the back panel help with the grip. The combination of glass and aluminium has been carried over from the Galaxy S6 (last year’s Note used leather), which means this is the best-looking Note device so far. There are three colour options: black, silver and gold.

The 5.7-inch Super AMOLED screen is fantastic. It has a 2,560x1,440 resolution, but what stands out is the sharpness. It isn’t a big leap over its predecessor, but it is incrementally better in almost every respect.

The colour reproduction has been toned down slightly this time around, but still remains quite vivid. While you may not need a quad HD screen, you will surely get used to this one.

The Note5 runs an Exynos octa-core chip with 4 GB RAM. The performance is quick, as expected. We still noticed, however, the occasional stutter while switching between apps or navigating the settings app. The phone doesn’t heat up when stressed, and the battery life is robust—a little more than a day in standard mode, and a day and a half in power-saver mode.

It runs Android 5.1.1 with the TouchWiz interface. It is simpler than it used to be, both in terms of additional features, and also while using resources. The entire S-Pen suite of options has been streamlined and is easier to understand. The app icons are noticeably smaller too, and look more sophisticated than the big blobs earlier.

We had praised the Galaxy S6’s camera as one of the best smartphone cameras out there. The same hardware has been used in the Note5 as well. It captures a fantastic amount of detail, great colours and takes clear low-light shots too.

Samsung has added a Pro mode too, which lets you tweak the shutter speed and ISO—but most users would prefer leaving it on Auto most of the time.

Samsung’s big screen Galaxy Note phones aren’t meant for everyone. But what you get is a good-looking device, an S Pen stylus that feels less gimmicky and more like a usable tool, good battery life and a fantastic screen.

The Samsung Galaxy Note5 is priced at 53,900
