The DSLR, or the digital single-lens reflex camera used widely by still photographers, has broadened its user base. The compact and handy camera, especially the one from the Canon stable, has gained a steady following among cinematographers, in India and internationally, for its superb reproduction qualities and ease of use. It has been especially designed to tackle crowd scenes and give those moments a candid feel.

Veteran documentary film-maker Ranjan Palit will use the Canon EOS 1D in portionsto produce hi-def images for Vishal Bhardwaj’s forthcoming 7 Khoon Maaf. In India, film-makers such as Anurag Kashyap and Sujoy Ghosh are known to use DSLRs in their films. The new cameras are being patronized mostly by young film-makers who desire a certain “look” for their films, and the trend points to contemporary Indian cinema’s greater involvement with realism.
