The organizers believe it's the biggest wine initiative in the country

A thousand varieties of wine will be available across 26 restaurants in Mumbai at reduced rates during the first Wine Week organized in the city. Starting 11 February and partnering with some of the city’s best-known restaurants, Wine Week hopes to capture the period when people have recovered from New Year binges to the period before school exams in March, and to coincide with Valentine’s Day.

The organizers of Wine Week, All Things Nice, believe it’s the biggest wine initiative in the country. Restaurants will create menus in which dishes will be matched to wines. There will also be masterclasses at select restaurants for those who feel intimidated by wine.

Nikhil Agarwal of All Things Nice says this is an opportunity to drink better wines, at a 30% reduced price. “This gives you a reason to go out, drink wine and experiment. The restaurants we have chosen have super cuisines. The reduction is just a facilitator," he says.

Agarwal says Indian wines will be a small part of the repertoire; the wines will mostly be from places that produce more—France, Chile, Argentina, Australia, South Africa and Spain among others.

Customers will have to register with All Things Nice through its website or send them an email requesting the restaurant of their choice, including Busaba, India Jones, Indigo, San-Qi, Kebab Korner, Pali Village Cafe, Vinoteca by Sula, China House, Mezzo Mezzo, Shamiana and Two One Two.

“The choice of restaurants," says Agarwal, “is in such a way that customers can try every possible cuisine available, which will allow them varieties in wine pairings." Agarwal says he would like to repeat the event later in the year, and depending on how successful it is, take it to cities like Delhi and Bangalore.

Meanwhile, the All India Wine Producers Association will hold the first India Grape Harvest Wine Festival 2013 in Nashik on 23-24 February. About 40 brands will participate. The two-day event will include seminars and lectures on viticulture practices, wine technology, home-made wine, cooking with it, etc., apart from food courts, grape stomping, a farmers’ market, and entertainment for an expected 8,000 visitors.

Reservations for Wine Week can be made through www.allthingsnice.in or over email:wineweek@allthingsnice.in.For tickets to the India Grape Harvest Wine Festival, email info@allindiawine.com.
