He’s so famous that in the US alone, one billion cards are sent each year on 14 February to celebrate St Valentine’s Day. We are not even going to speculate on how many the Japanese send since they decided that Valentine San was one of theirs. The ancient Romans complain that they were the original inventors of the famous love machine, since this was the day that they celebrated the Feast of Lupercalia. It was the first day of spring. Birds mated, crocuses popped out of the earth and young men proposed to their sweethearts. The remains of St Valentine, in the meanwhile, rests in a crypt in the Carmelite church of Whitefriars Street in Dublin, Ireland. How did he get there? You’ll have to ask the birds, there are at least three claimants to the title of the Saint of True Love.
