Crowne Plaza Today, Gurgaon
Targeted at the business traveller, Gurgaon’s Crowne Plaza Today has 234 rooms and claims it already has a 65% average occupancy rate since it opened in mid-June. That the focus is on companies is evident from the fact that even the lobby doubles up as an informal meeting zone. “Our lobby level, which we refer to as the Connexions Village, serves as a perfect ‘meet and eat’ zone. This area has Wi-Fi access, and is an ideal spot for a small group of executives to hold an informal discussion,” says Kadambini Mittal, director, sales and marketing. The hotel provides 24-hour secretarial services and has laptops on hire.
For bigger conferences, it has 11 meeting rooms, each complete with its own inbuilt projector, LCD screen and coffee vending machine at hand. Located in the heart of Gurgaon’s business district, the Crowne Plaza Today lies on National Highway 8, and is just a 10-minute ride to and from the international airport.
Three restaurants (Wildfire—the NCR’s only Brazilian food eatery, Café G, with a special section dedicated to organic health food, and Connexions Bar and Lounge) and Crowne Plaza’s spa make this a good work-play destination.
What we liked: The two-door wardrobe which opens into the room on one side and the restroom from the other side; a basic bedside shopping menu (things such as markers, shaving kit, CD-ROMs) for a professional on the move and a great facilitator stationery kit in every meeting room. Another unique concept is the moving lunch cart that can be wheeled into the meeting rooms for a quick working lunch.
Rack rates: Superior rooms (single occupancy) start at Rs14,000 (currently, the 10% luxury tax is not levied in Gurgaon).

Galaxy Hotel, Shopping and Spa, Gurgaon
Once again targeted at the international business traveller, this 80-room hotel-cum-mall is situated at the 32nd Milestone on National Highway 8. “We are looking at customers who are fed up of staying in five-star hotels which are clones of each other,” says Saurabh Kaushik, manager, marketing and promotions, Galaxy Hotel, Shopping and Spa, which opened in April. Galaxy’s interiors are done in a contemporary, minimalist style, and at present, the average occupancy rate is pegged at 35-40%.
Galaxy’s reception area can only be accessed through a special lift and it is situated on the second floor. It is small, and meant only for in-house guests, as is their bar ‘Ultra Premium’. The Technogym workout zone, with the option of personalized programmes, is a bonus. Their spa is scheduled to open shortly.
Another highlight is the mall attached to the hotel and the three restaurants (Monk—Oriental food, Terroir—European cuisine and Axis—world cuisine) that have been getting good reviews. With Central Cottage Industries Exposition and Anokhi on its premises, as well as designer stores like J.J. Valaya, Narendra Kumar etc., Galaxy offers its guests a chance to indulge in after work shopping. Apart from the usual half a dozen boardrooms, three conference rooms, Wi-Fi in open access areas, Internet access in all rooms, the hotel provides a DVD player in all rooms and is in the process of setting up a DVD library.
What we liked: A special safe for laptops which has an inbuilt charging option and the 20 spa rooms, each with a private sky roof, a whirlpool tub and an Aolida massage chair.
Rack rates: Galaxy’s Deluxe rooms start at Rs14,500 (currently, the 10% luxury tax is not levied in Gurgaon), while the spa rooms are Rs16,500.
