Once in the late 1980s, Tamil Nadu and my side Karnataka were involved in a thrill-a-minute Ranji Trophy match. We had one problem though. Our ace spinner Raghuram Bhat was down with a sore toe, so much so that each time it touched his shoe, he winced in pain. Several trips to the dressing room later, one senior player had a sudden brainwave—he shoved ‘gulab jamuns’ left over from lunch into Raghuram’s socks to give him the required padding, and it worked!
