When we say steel, most people think Tata. Or giant industrial buildings. Or laboratory counters. But the recently-held Stainless Innovation Awards, sponsored by Jindal Stainless, honoured an array of unusual designs, from the pencil sharpener to an Indian urinal that could solve that great public nuisance once and for all.
The sleekest design had to be Alex Davis’s ‘My Lazy Garden’. Taking home the top prize in the Professional Product Design category, Davis handcrafted his plants to appear vividly lifelike, but with a highly polished steel shine.
The small sculptures draw inspiration from the garden, with orchids, ivies, lily pads, monstera leaves, agave plants, and bamboo making an appearance, and come equipped with their own steel pots. Though the pieces are mainly decorative, Davis does offer a bamboo coat hanger and bamboo vases.
The unusual creation of delicate leaves wrought in such a sharp, modern metal throws off all our old preconceptions. Steel? Yep, that’s beautiful, innovative and creative any day.
