Telcos using Radio Link Timeout Tech to mask calls, claims Trai

A Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) investigation into the rumours that telecom operators use a technology called Radio Link Timeout to mask call drops has actually found them to be true. The telecom regulator found that some operators like Aircel, Idea and Vodafone were using it to mask call drops in Mumbai circle. The technology works by showing the call as connected even when a user moves to an area with poor connectivity to give the user the impression that the call has not been disconnected. Read more here

Amazon launches new Kindle reader with audio feature in US

Amazon has come up with a thinner and lighter version of its entry level Kindle e-book reader range. Priced at $100 the e-reader has the same 6-inch screen as its predecessor but packs a audio feature which reads e-books aloud when the device is connected to a Bluetooth speaker or headphones. This feature makes it useful for blind people or those driving. The new Kindle is also more powerful but the screen is still not backlit like the Paperweight range of Kindle readers which cost slightly more.

NASA develops new data transmission technology

NASA has developed a new technology which can transmit data from space stations to earth faster than what is possible currently. The new technology is known as Delay/Disruption Tolerant Network (DTN) as it doesn’t require all connection nodes on a spacecraft to be active at the same time. This technology can be very useful for spaceships that are sent to explore deep space. Read more here

90% of Android devices affected by Godless malware?

Leading antivirus company Trend Micro has detected a new family of malware called Godless which basically targets Android smartphones. Trend Micro claims 90% of all Android devices are affected by it. Godless works by rooting the operating system on the phone so it can take over the admin rights over a smartphone and install unauthorised apps on the phone. Trend Micro claims various apps which can be potential carriers for the malware are already available undetected on the Google Play Store. Read more here

Sweden rolls out electric road for specific vehicles

Sweden has become the first country to roll out a short but electricity-powered road. The two-km-long stretch opened on Wednesday and will power electrified trucks by Swedish automobile manufacturer Scania. These trucks are hybrids and use bio-fuel to run on the regular roads but when they will run on the new roads they can switch to electricity to power them up. The power will be transferred through overhead power lines which will then connect to the pantograph power collectors on the truck. Read more here
