Despite the inevitable tabloid slant of retired ‘Sun’ reporter Stan Piecha’s writing, his friends will remember him as a sharp performer who was never second in the queue for stories. He once dressed up as a doctor in 1989 to sneak into Gerhard Berger’s hospital room after the Austrian’s fiery crash at Imola. Looking down at the bandaged Ferrari driver, Piecha’s first words were: “I’ve got a splitting headache. I’ve had one hell of a journey getting here.” To which Berger politely replied, “So how are you now?” They eventually got round to discussing the reason for his visit, and the story appeared under the memorable headline ‘You lucky Berger!’
