New Delhi: Pink, starring Taapsee Pannu, Kirti Kulhari and Amitabh Bachchan, which opened to 4.32 crore last Friday is a social drama that plays out its relevant message through court proceedings. The film proves that Bollywood continues to embrace the tension and intensity of courtroom narratives even after so many years. Here are 10 Bollywood courtroom dramas that made an impact.

1. Jolly LLB (2013): Director Subhash Kapoor’s comedy drama was the story of a small-town lawyer who wins against a high-profile veteran, while exposing the fundamental flaws of the judicial system. Starring Arshad Warsi and Boman Irani, it made 32 crore at the box office.

2. OMG- Oh My God! (2012): Paresh Rawal challenges religious dogma and practices in the satirical drama directed by Umesh Shukla. The film, remade in Telugu and Kannada, netted 81 crore in box office collections.

3. No One Killed Jessica (2011): The film, starring Rani Mukerji and Vidya Balan, was based on the real-life Jessica Lal murder case and the media trial that eventually led to the sentencing of the accused. The Rajkumar Gupta film made 24 crore in box office collections.

4. Shaurya (2008): Based on 1992 Hollywood legal drama A Few Good Men, the Samar Khan-directed film, set against the backdrop of the Kashmir conflict, revolved around the court-martial of a Muslim soldier. The Kay Kay Menon and Rahul Bose-starrer only managed 1 crore at the box office.

5. Aitraaz (2004): Kareena Kapoor Khan plays a lawyer wife fighting for her husband (Akshay Kumar) in a sexual harassment case against the rich and powerful Priyanka Chopra in the Abbas-Mustan-directed romantic thriller. The film made over 7 crore at the box office.

6. Damini (1993): The Rajkumar Santoshi-directed female-centric film revolves around a married woman (Meenakshi Seshadri) who fights injustice in her patriarchal family. Rishi Kapoor plays the husband and Sunny Deol the supportive lawyer in the film that earned 4 crore at the box office.

7. Meri Jung (1985): Anil Kapoor plays an idealistic lawyer fighting the evil high-profile prosecutor Amrish Puri whom he owes his tragic childhood to. The Subhash Ghai directed film netted 4.50 crore at the box office.

8. Mera Saaya (1966): The Raj Khosla-directed film revolves around Sadhana in dramatic court proceedings, claiming to be married to Sunil Dutt who, in turn, insists his wife is dead. The film had made over 3 crore at the box office.

9. Waqt (1965): The Yash Chopra-directed film is considered the first multi-starrer of Indian film history. Featuring an ensemble cast including Sunil Dutt, Raaj Kumar, Shashi Kapoor, Sadhana, Balraj Sahni, Sharmila Tagore and Achala Sachdev, it made 5 crore in box office collections.

10. Kanoon (1960): The B.R. Chopra film, India’s second songless talkie, was based on capital punishment. Featuring Rajendra Kumar, Nanda and Ashok Kumar, it made about 80 lakh at the box office.
