Women with four or more tattoos have higher self esteem

Having more than four tattoos on the body can improve self-esteem in women, suggests a study. Researchers from Texas Tech University studied 2,395 college students studying at six different universities. Out of this, 82% of the participants were in the age group of 18 to 20 years and 59% were female. The researchers measured levels of depression, number of suicide attempts, and self-esteem in them and found that women with four or more tattoos had the highest levels of self-esteem than those who had less than four tattoos or none at all. Researchers feel four or more tattoos make a bigger difference as then the body art becomes more of a person’s identity. The study was published in the Social Science Journal. Read more here.

Loneliness can make people sick

Loneliness is not good for health as it triggers physiological reactions that make people sick, warns an American study. Researchers from the University of Chicago and the University of California claim loneliness can activate physical responses like fight-or-flight stress signals in body, which hampers the production of white blood cells, which protects the body against bacterial and viral infection. It also increases activity in genes causing inflammation in the body. The researchers enlisted 141 older adults and studied the patterns of gene expression in white blood cells and found 36 of them to be chronically lonely. The study was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Read more here.

Pulse rate a marker of early death

People with pulse rate usually higher than normal are more likely to die early of factors like cardiovascular diseases than those with normal pulse rate, a study warns. Pulse rate is an indicator of the number of times the heart beats in a minute. When a person is sitting or lying down, the normal heart rate is between 60 and 100 beats per minute. The researchers examined 46 previous studies involving 2 million patients and found that the risk of early death was 45% higher in people with a pulse rate of more than 80 beats a minute compared to people with the lowest pulse rate. The study was published in Canadian Medical Association Journal. Read more here.

Using generic drugs more often can reduce healthcare costs

Prescribing generic drugs instead of branded drugs can cut expenses on healthcare drastically, improve patient loyalty towards doctors and have positive health outcomes, suggests a study. According to the American College of Physicians, which carried out the study, generic medicines are economical and contrary to existing notions can be as effective and safe as their branded alternatives. During the study, the researchers found that 45% of prescriptions for diabetes carried names of branded drugs despite the fact that their identical generics were available. The study was published in the Annals of Internal Medicine. Read more here.
