A new study published in The New England Journal of Medicine says that women living in areas with higher levels of air pollution run a greater risk of developing cardiovascular disease. Researchers studied 65,000 women aged 50 to 79 who did not initially have cardiovascular disease, following them for up to nine years to see who later developed a heart problem. They linked this with the average outdoor air pollution levels near each woman’s home, and found that higher pollution levels posed a significant hazard. Now juxtapose these findings with the SPM (suspended particulate matter) levels in your city in residential areas in Delhi—it’s around 140 micrograms/cubic metre, while in some areas in Mumbai, it is as much as 200 mg/m3— and calculate the risks for yourself!
