Seasoned Scotch drinkers can be an infuriating lot to the less proficient, with their adroit swirling techniques and ability to detect an extraordinary variety of seemingly strong notes that everyone else around the table can barely get a whiff of.
According to the Balvenie Brand Ambassador David Mair, however, detecting these notes and learning to enjoy a good glass of Scotch are far from being uphill tasks. He explains that there is no “correct” way to drink Scotch: Everyone has to find their own equilibrium, and cultivating an open mind and a discerning nose are good ways to begin.
In this video, he walks us through a Scotch tasting, explaining how the drink is prepared and matured, how wood and age affect the taste, and how the Scots—the world’s most seasoned whisky drinkers—toast one another when enjoying a “wee dram”.
