Samsung’s mobile payment service Samsung Pay, which allows users to make payment at retail stores and restaurants using a smartphone, is available to all Indian users who have one of the six compatible Samsung smartphones. These phones are Galaxy Note 5, Galaxy S7, Galaxy S7 Edge, Galaxy S6 Edge+, Galaxy A7 (2016 and 2017) and Galaxy A5 (2016 and 2017). Interestingly, users who don’t have any of these smartphones can still use Samsung Pay if they have the Gear S3 smart watch, which costs Rs28,500. The Gear S3 is a Tizen OS-based smart watch and works with all Android phones running Android 4.4 and higher and Apple iPhones running iOS 9.0. However, Samsung Pay option is currently supported on the watch, if paired with an Android phone.

To use Samsung Pay on Gear S3 users need to download the Samsung Gear app (free to download and use) on their Android phone from the Google Play Store and connect it with the Gear S3 watch via Bluetooth. Once the app is downloaded, the user has to select Samsung Pay and choose the payment option that he wants to link with Samsung Pay. As of now users can link their Paytm wallet, UPI app and credit and debit cards of Axis Bank, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank and Standard Chartered Bank and debit cards from State Bank of India.

The payment option linked with the phone will automatically show up on the Gear S3 and can be selected from the watch interface itself at the time of payment.

Users don’t have to take their Android smartphone out of their pocket. They can simply wave the Gear S3 watch at the payment terminal, enter the payment amount on the terminal and punch the credit/debit card verification PIN to make a payment.

The Gear S3 supports both NFC (near-field communication) and MST ( magnetic secure transmission) technology that enables payment through Samsung Pay. To keep payments with the Gear S3 secure, Samsung has used the same Knox security technology which keeps card and other critical details secure in an encrypted data vault. So, even if a user loses or misplaces his Gear S3, the card details will not be compromised.
